About Kibera
Brief history about Kibera
The word Kibera originated from a Nubian word ‘Kibra’ which means forest or jungle. The Nubians, being the first occupants of the area, have been living there since the Second World War, after they were allocated land by the British colonial government.
After the upgrading of Soweto in South Africa, Kibera has become the largest slum in Africa and the second largest in the world after Mumbai in India. It occupies an estimated area of 12 km2 and with a population of over 1 million people.
Life in Kibera is generally characterized by extreme poverty, with many people surviving with less than a dollar a day.
